[Address to Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh by the Singapore Chinese merchants on the occasion of his visit Singapore in 1869]. 1869.

The panegyric on British rule in Singapore was presented to the Duke of Edinburgh by a group of some 80 Singapore Chinese merchants in 1869. Many of the merchants were prominent persons such as Tan Kim Ching (son of Tan Tock Seng), Chiang Hong Lim, Siah Eu Chin, Tan Seng Poh and Hoo Ah Kay. The verso of the address is a reproduction in Indian ink on silk of an original painting by Percy Carpenter depicting "Singapore View" [text from bottom centre of painting] "from Tuluk Ayer Hill" [text from bottom left of painting].

1 double-sided folded sheet (6 panels unfolded) : front and back covers are carved bamboo boards, verso of manuscript is a painting ; 23 x 14 cm., unfolds to 23 x 80 cm.
